Chapter 9

At the outskirts of town, Pegasus made a perfect landing in a rocky gorge. A crowd had gathered at the scene of the accident. The two boys lay trapped beneath a giant rock.

“Help!” one boy shouted.

“We’re suffocating!” the other boy cried. “Somebody call 9-9-9!” the first boy screamed. Hercules rushed to their side. “Easy, guys, you’ll be all right.” With a grunt, he lifted the rock. The boys were free!

Meg was amazed. But the townsfolk only clapped politely.

“Hey, mister,” the first boy said. “You’re strong!” Hercules smiled and patted them on the head. “Well, just try to be a little more careful next time, OK, kids?”

“We certainly will,” the first boy said with a smile. With a wave the two boys ran off up the hill. Away from the crowd. Behind a big rock.

Hades was waiting for them.

The Lord of the Dead smiled at the two boys as he snacked on a bowl full of worms. Disasters always made him hungry. “Stirring performance, boys. I was really moved.”

The boys grinned as they transformed into Pain and Panic.

Hades smacked his lips and wiped his mouth on his sleeve. “And hey, two thumbs up for our leading lady, Meg.” He raised his fists—and his thumbs lit up like candles.

Down below Meg felt someone’s eyes bum into her back. She glanced up the hill at Hades. Then she turned back to Hercules with a guilty look on her face. “Get out of here,” she whispered, “while you still can.”

“I did well!” Hercules cried to Phil. “They even applauded! Sort of.”

Phil was just about to congratulate him when a high-pitched hissing sound echoed along the canyon walls.

“I hate to burst your bubble, kid. But that isn’t applause,” said Phil.

The hissing grew louder and louder. Lightning flashed as a creature poked its head from the inky depths of a cave in the mountain. It was a giant serpent-like monster with scaly skin and sharp fangs.

“Phil,” Hercules gasped, “wh-what do you call that thing?”

Phil took cover. “Two words: Run for it!”

“The Hydra!” screamed a woman in the crowd.

High above them Hades smiled. “Let’s get ready to rumble!”

The monster lunged at Hercules, but he tumbled away and drew his sword. Jumping to his feet, he used all the skills Phil had taught him to dodge the serpent and keep him at bay.

“That’s it,” Phil coached from behind the rock. “Dance round him! Watch the teeth! Keep moving! Come on, lead with your left, lead with your left—”

Hercules struck out with his right. The serpent struck him and sent him flying.

Phil rolled his eyes, exasperated. “Your other left!”

Hercules landed hard on the rocky ground. Quickly he rolled to his feet and faced the Hydra.

The Hydra lashed out with its tongue and caught Hercules by the ankle. She flipped him in the air and—

Gulp! She swallowed Hercules whole—then let out a huge, satisfied Burp! The Hydra smiled.

But then her eyes crossed. A sick look spread across her face. A man-sized bulge formed in her throat.

With a roar, Hercules slashed his way out of the monster’s throat.
